Have you ever wanted to share something on Threads — but only with specific people?

Not everything is meant for all your followers. Sometimes you only want to share with close friends, core fans, or a particular community.

Threads Circle was built exactly for that.

Similar to Instagram's "Close Friends," Circle lets you create an exclusive list and share specific posts only with those people. This complete guide explains how Circle works, how to set it up, when to use it, and how to use it to build a high-engagement niche community.

The Privacy Dilemma of Public Posting — and How Circle Solves It

Social media creates a paradox: you want to reach more people, but you also want your privacy.

The frustrations of public posting:

  • Want to share personal thoughts, but don't want everyone to see them
  • Want to test new content, but don't want it to affect your overall image
  • Want to engage deeply with core fans without excluding others
  • Want to share professional insights, but only with industry peers

Circle resolves these issues: It gives you a middle ground between "fully public" and "fully private." You can create a specific list and share certain posts only with that group — not all your followers.

Practical use cases:

  • Content creators: Share behind-the-scenes footage and unpublished content with superfans
  • Brand managers: Provide exclusive information and early previews to VIP customers
  • Professionals: Exchange industry observations and deep discussions with peers
  • General users: Share everyday life and genuine thoughts with close friends

Key Point 1 — What Is Circle? How It Differs from IG Close Friends

The Core Concept of Circle

Threads Circle is an "audience segmentation" feature.

You can build a specific user list (your Circle). When you publish a post, you choose "Circle" as the audience — and only people on that list can see it. Everyone else who follows you cannot.

Circle characteristics:

  • Each account can only create 1 Circle
  • No limit on the number of Circle members
  • You can add or remove members at any time
  • Removed members are not notified
  • Circle posts have a green badge so you can tell they're restricted shares

Circle vs. IG Close Friends: Detailed Comparison

While the concepts are similar, Threads Circle and Instagram Close Friends have some key differences.

The most critical difference: Threads Circle and IG Close Friends are completely separate lists.

This means:

  • Your Circle list in Threads does NOT sync to IG
  • Your IG Close Friends list does NOT appear in Threads
  • You need to set up both lists separately

Why is it designed this way? Because the two platforms serve different purposes:

  • Threads: Text discussions and idea sharing — you may want to share with "like-minded peers"
  • Instagram: Visual content and life documentation — you may want to share with "close friends"

How to Identify a Circle Post

When you publish a Circle post:

  1. The compose view will show a "Circle only" indicator
  2. After publishing, the post has a green "Circle" label at the top
  3. On your profile page, Circle posts have a green indicator

What Circle members see:

  1. Your Circle post appears in their feed
  2. The post has a green Circle badge
  3. They cannot share or repost it (privacy protection)

What non-Circle members see:

  • They cannot see Circle posts at all
  • Circle posts don't show on your profile page for non-members
  • They have no way of knowing you published a Circle post

Key Point 2 — How to Create and Edit Your Circle List (3 Steps)

Step 1: Go to Circle Settings

Navigation path:

  1. Open the Threads app
  2. Go to "Profile" (bottom-right icon)
  3. Tap the "☰" menu in the top-right
  4. Select "Circle"

First-time users will see:

  • An introduction to the Circle feature
  • A "Create Circle" button
  • Example instructions (how to use it)

Step 2: Select Circle Members

Method A: Choose from your followers

  1. Tap "Create Circle"
  2. Your followers list is displayed
  3. Scroll down through the list
  4. Tap users you want to add (a blue checkmark appears)
  5. You can select multiple users at once

Method B: Search for a specific user

  1. Tap the search box at the top
  2. Enter a username
  3. Select from the search results
  4. Tap to add to Circle

Method C: Choose from people you follow

  1. You can also select from "People you follow"
  2. Browse accounts you follow
  3. Select the ones you want to add

Recommended number of members:

  • Too few (fewer than 5): Limited interaction
  • Ideal range (20–50): Best balance
  • Too many (over 100): Loses the "small circle" feel

Step 3: Save and Manage

Saving your Circle: After selecting, tap "Done" or "Save." Your Circle list is created!

Adding members:

  1. Go to Circle settings
  2. Tap "Edit Circle"
  3. Select users to add
  4. Save

Removing members:

  1. Go to Circle settings
  2. Tap "Edit Circle"
  3. Uncheck users you want to remove
  4. Save

Important: Removed members are not notified. They simply stop seeing your future Circle posts.

Viewing the member list: You can always view current members and make edits in Circle settings.

Key Point 3 — How to Publish Circle Posts

Once your Circle list is set up, you can start sharing exclusive content.

Steps to Publish a Circle Post

Step 1: Start composing a post

  1. Tap the "+" button at the bottom center of Threads
  2. Enter the compose view
  3. Write your text
  4. Attach images or videos (optional)

Step 2: Set the audience to Circle

  1. Find the "Audience" option at the bottom of the compose view
  2. The default is "Everyone"
  3. Tap to switch to "Circle"
  4. You'll see the green Circle icon

Step 3: Publish Tap the "Post" button — done!

What it looks like after publishing:

  • The post appears in your own feed
  • A green "Circle" label shows at the top of the post
  • Circle members also see it in their feed
  • Non-Circle members cannot see it at all

Restrictions on Circle Posts

What you can do:

  • ✅ Write text (up to 500 characters)
  • ✅ Attach images (up to 10)
  • ✅ Attach video (up to 5 minutes)
  • ✅ Use hashtags
  • ✅ Mention other users (@mentions)

What you cannot do:

  • ❌ Non-Circle members can't repost or quote
  • ❌ It won't appear in search (only visible in Circle members' feeds)
  • ❌ Won't appear in "For You" recommendations (only in the Circle feed)

Privacy protection mechanism: Threads restricts the spread of Circle posts to ensure only the people you designate can see them.

How to Confirm a Post Is Circle-Only

Before publishing: In the compose view, check whether "Circle" and the green icon are shown at the bottom.

After publishing:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Look at the post list
  3. Circle posts will have a green indicator beside them
  4. Tap the post to see the "Circle only" description

Testing: Log in with another account (one that's not in your Circle) and view your profile — the Circle post should not be visible.

Editing and Deleting Circle Posts

Editing: Threads does not currently support editing published posts. If you need to make changes, delete and repost.

Deleting:

  1. Tap "⋯" on the Circle post
  2. Select "Delete"
  3. Confirm

Note: Deletion is permanent. Circle members will also lose access to that post.

Want to learn more about post deletion? See our Threads Post Deletion Recovery Guide. To have one-on-one deep conversations with Circle members, you can also use Threads Direct Messages to build closer connections.

Key Point 4 — Privacy and Security

When using Circle, understanding the privacy mechanisms is important.

Will Circle Members Know They've Been Added?

Answer: No.

Threads will not notify users "You've been added to OOO's Circle."

The only way Circle members find out: When they see your Circle post in their feed with a green "Circle" label, they'll realize they're in your Circle.

Why it's designed this way:

  • Avoids awkwardness (no one knows who is or isn't included)
  • Protects the poster's privacy
  • Reduces social pressure

Can Circle Members Share Circle Posts?

Answer: No.

Threads restricts sharing for Circle posts:

  • ❌ Cannot directly repost
  • ❌ Cannot quote-repost
  • ❌ Cannot share to IG Stories
  • ✅ Can take a screenshot (but this violates trust)

Protection mechanism: This design ensures Circle posts don't spread to non-Circle members.

Ethical reminder: Although it's technically possible to take a screenshot, please respect the poster's intent and don't publicly share Circle-only content.

What Happens When Someone Is Removed from Circle?

When you remove someone from Circle:

  • They will not receive a notification
  • They cannot see your future Circle posts
  • They can still see older Circle posts (if they saw them before)

Note: Past Circle posts that the person viewed while they were in your Circle may have already been seen. Removing them only prevents them from seeing new Circle posts going forward.

Who Can See My Circle Member List?

Answer: Only you.

The Circle member list is completely private:

  • Other Circle members cannot see the list
  • Non-Circle members cannot see it either
  • Only you can view it in settings

This protects:

  • Your social relationship privacy
  • The privacy of your Circle members

What Happens to Circle Data if I Delete My Threads Account?

Circle data will be deleted:

  • The Circle member list
  • All Circle posts

Important reminder: Deleting your Threads account simultaneously deletes your Instagram account (because they are linked). If you only want to stop using Threads, choose "Deactivate Profile" rather than "Delete."

Best Practice Tips

Tip 1: Update your Circle list regularly Review it every 1–2 months, remove inactive members, and add newly active fans.

Tip 2: Don't replace public posts entirely Circle is a supplement, not a replacement. Keep posting publicly to attract new followers.

Recommended ratio:

  • Public posts: 70–80%
  • Circle posts: 20–30%

Tip 3: Offer genuinely unique value Don't use Circle as a "content dump." Provide content that's truly valuable and exclusive.

Tip 4: Engage and respond actively When Circle members comment, prioritize replying — make them feel the special treatment.

Tip 5: Be transparent about Circle You can occasionally mention "Circle exclusive content" in public posts to attract curiosity — but don't overdo it and come across as boastful.

Paper Four Quadrants Circle Usage Scenarios

Key Point 6 — Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How many Circles can one account create?

A: Only 1 Circle.

Threads currently limits each account to one Circle list. You can't create multiple groups like Twitter's "Lists" feature (no "Circle A," "Circle B," etc.).

If you want to segment your audience further: You can only choose between "Everyone" and "Circle" — there's no multi-group option.

Q2: Is there a member limit for Circle?

A: No limit!

Technically, you can add all your followers to Circle — but that defeats the "small circle" purpose.

Recommendations:

  • General users: 5–20 people
  • Creators: 20–50 people
  • Brands: 50–100 people
  • Professionals: 10–30 people

Q3: Does Threads Circle sync with IG Close Friends?

A: No — they are completely independent.

Threads Circle and IG Close Friends are two separate lists that must be set up individually.

This means:

  • Being in someone's Threads Circle ≠ being in their IG Close Friends
  • You need to set up both lists separately
  • The member lists can be completely different

Q4: How do I check if a specific person is in my Circle?

A: Go to Circle settings and check the list.

Steps:

  1. Threads → Profile → Menu → Circle
  2. Tap "Edit Circle"
  3. Search for or scroll to find the user and check whether they have a checkmark

Quick confirmation: If that user sees your Circle post in their feed and comments on it, they're in your Circle.

Q5: Can I make a Circle post public after publishing?

A: No — once published, the audience cannot be changed.

Once a post is published as a Circle post, it cannot be changed to "Everyone."

If you want to make it public:

  1. Delete the original Circle post
  2. Republish it and select "Everyone"

Tip: Always double-check your audience setting before posting.

Q6: Will someone know if they've been removed from Circle?

A: They won't receive a notification, but they may notice.

What won't happen:

  • Threads does not notify "You've been removed from OOO's Circle"
  • The person receives no notification at all

How they might realize:

  • They could see your Circle posts before, and now they suddenly can't
  • By comparing with other friends' feeds, they may realize they're missing certain posts

Recommendation: Think carefully before removing someone — consider the impact on the relationship.

Q7: Will Circle posts appear in search results?

A: No.

The reach of Circle posts is strictly limited:

  • ❌ Will not appear in search results
  • ❌ Will not appear in "For You" recommendations
  • ❌ Will not appear on hashtag pages
  • ✅ Only appears in the "Following" feed of Circle members

Privacy protection: This ensures Circle posts are never accidentally spread.

Q8: Can I share a Circle post to IG Stories?

A: No — Circle posts cannot be shared.

To protect privacy, Threads restricts sharing for Circle posts:

  • ❌ Cannot be shared directly to IG
  • ❌ Cannot be forwarded to others
  • ❌ Cannot be quote-reposted

The only option: Take a screenshot and share manually (but this violates the spirit of Circle's trust — not recommended).

Circle's Core Value and Best-Use Strategies

The Core Value of Circle

Balancing privacy and sharing: Circle gives you the most comfortable way to share — somewhere between "fully public" and "fully private."

Deepening core relationships: Through exclusive content, build deeper connections with your most important fans, customers, and friends.

A safe space to test ideas: Test new ideas with a small group before going public — reducing risk.

3 Tips to Get Started with Circle

Tip 1: Start small Keep your initial Circle small (10–20 people) to ensure quality interaction.

Tip 2: Provide real value Don't use Circle as a content dump — share content that is genuinely exclusive and valuable.

Tip 3: Review and adjust regularly Every 1–2 months, review your Circle members, adjust the list, and maintain community vitality.

Circle Isn't Perfect, but It's Useful

What Circle can't do:

  • Fully replace public posting
  • Reach large numbers of new audiences
  • Replace one-on-one direct messages

What Circle is best for:

  • Deep interaction with core supporters
  • Testing new content or products
  • Sharing content that isn't suitable for public posting
  • Building an exclusive community atmosphere
