Instagram Follower Analytics Tools | 6 Tools Compared and How to Choose

Six Instagram follower analytics tools checked against their own live sites: Instagram Insights, Social Blade, Phlanx, Later, Iconosquare and HypeAuditor. What each one can and cannot do, official pricing with the monthly-vs-annual basis stated, and why this article names no 'who unfollowed me' app.

Instagram Follower Analytics Tools | 6 Tools Compared

Is your engagement rate high or low?

How fast are your competitors growing?

Which numbers does Instagram hand you for free, and which ones do you have to pay for?

This article splits "Instagram analytics tools" into two questions: what the official Insights give you, and what third-party tools add on top. Six tools, each one opened and checked against its own live site on 2026-08-29, with every price labelled monthly or annual.

This article is an extension of our Complete Instagram Followers Guide. We recommend reading the foundational guide first.

How Tools Were Selected (the method first)

The usual way to write this topic is to score every tool — features out of ten, ease of use out of ten, data accuracy out of ten. This article gives no scores, because those numbers come with no published methodology and no reproducible test, which leaves you no way to check where they came from. Three conditions you can verify yourself take their place:

  1. The site actually loads right now — judged on the content that renders after loading, not on the first status code returned. Every domain was also hit with a nonsense path as a control, to confirm that a 404 really comes back as a 404.
  2. Pricing is published, and the basis is visible — monthly and annual billing routinely differ by more than 20%, so a single number without the basis is not a price.
  3. The product can be identified — the app stores are full of near-identically named products from entirely different developers. If a single product cannot be pinned down, it is not in this article.

Anything failing those three is not listed, and no lookalike is substituted in its place. That is why there are 6 tools here.

What Instagram's Own Insights Do and Don't Show

A common belief is that Insights require switching to a professional account. Per Instagram's current Help Center wording, that is not correct:

You need to have a public (personal or professional) account on Instagram to view insights. — View account and content insights on Instagram

What Instagram gives you (per the metric list in About Instagram insights):

  • Views: how many times your content was played or displayed
  • Viewers: unique accounts that saw your content, with top countries, cities, age ranges and gender breakdown
  • Interactions: likes, comments, saves and shares
  • Accounts engaged: unique accounts that interacted with your content
  • Total followers: follower trends including growth (gained or lost), top locations, age range and most active times
  • Content you shared: how many posts, stories or reels you published in the selected timeframe

Three hard limits, from the same two pages:

  • Data only goes back 90 days. You can pick 7, 14, 30 or 90 days or a custom range, but the range has to sit inside that 90-day window.
  • Follower trends need at least 100 followers, and audience demographics need you to reach or engage over 100 accounts before they appear.
  • Boosting is professional-accounts-only. Viewing insights is not — paying to promote content is.

The critical one: no metric in the official list identifies which account unfollowed you. You get the net gained/lost number. You do not get names. Everything below follows from that.

What the paid tiers actually sell

Free tiers generally show you the present. Paid tiers sell time depth and export:

  • Data retention: free tiers often keep a few dozen days; paid tiers go to 1 year, 2 years or unlimited
  • Reporting and export: white-label reports and scheduled delivery live in the mid and upper tiers
  • Seats and profiles: free tiers are usually 1 user and a small number of social profiles
  • Ads: free web tools are ad-supported, and removing ads is the first thing a paid tier buys

One safety rule that does not expire

Tools come and go. These do not:

Never:

  • ❌ Give your Instagram password to any third-party tool
  • ❌ Use a tool that asks for "full account access"
  • ❌ Install an app from anywhere other than the official store — third-party APKs are one of the main routes to a compromised account

Always:

  • ✅ Authorise only through Instagram's official OAuth flow (the login screen is on Instagram's own domain)
  • ✅ Review and revoke authorisations you no longer use
  • ✅ Before installing, check three fields on the store page — developer name, last updated date, and number of ratings. Those tell you more about whether an app is still maintained than the star rating does.

How to check your authorized apps (current steps per the Meta Help Center):

  1. Click More in the bottom left, then click Settings
  2. Below Your app and media, click Website permissions
  3. Click Apps and Websites, then click Active
  4. Click Remove next to the app you'd like to remove

The 6 Tools

Every entry names its source so you can check it yourself. Every price states whether it is monthly or annual billing.

Tool 1: Instagram Insights (Official, Free)

What it can do

  • Show official data for your own account and each piece of content (Views / Viewers / Interactions / Accounts engaged)
  • Show net follower growth, follower locations, age ranges and most active times
  • Show per-item insights for stories, reels and live videos

What it cannot do

  • Show who unfollowed you — there is no such metric in the official list
  • Look up anyone else's account
  • Go back further than 90 days, or export a full report

How to use it: This is your baseline. When a third-party number disagrees with Insights, Insights wins.

Tool 2: Social Blade (Has a Free Tier)

  • Price: Free tier $0. Paid tiers are billed annually — Bronze $59.99/yr (= $5.00/mo), Silver $149.99/yr (= $12.50/mo), Gold $599.99/yr (= $50.00/mo), Platinum $1,439.99/yr (= $120.00/mo)
  • Platform: Web
  • Source: socialblade.com subscription plans page (checked 2026-08-29)

What it can do

  • Look up any public account's follower count and daily change — the single biggest difference from official Insights
  • Show long-term growth curves across YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, Facebook, Instagram and more
  • Paid tiers remove ads, raise the number of favourited accounts, unlock longer top lists, and extend table data retention (Bronze 30 days / Silver 60 / Gold 180 / Platinum 365)

What it cannot do

  • Show unfollow detail or follower composition
  • Give you post-level engagement detail for your own account
  • See private accounts

How to use it: Best used to rank competitor growth. Favourite a handful of rivals and check the net change weekly.

Tool 3: Phlanx (Free Engagement Calculator, Paid Platform)

What it can do

  • Calculate an engagement rate: you enter the follower count and average likes and comments yourself, and it returns the rate and average interactions per post
  • The same page publishes its own average engagement rates by follower band, which works as a rough comparison baseline

What it cannot do

  • Pull data automatically from a username — the current page asks you to type the numbers in
  • Track unfollows, follower composition, or any history
  • Anything else for free; the rest of the marketing suite is behind a subscription

⚠️ Many write-ups describe Phlanx as "enter a username and it calculates automatically" and as "completely free". Neither matches the live pages as of 2026-08-29 — check the official pages before relying on either claim.

Tool 4: Later (Scheduling + Analytics, No Free Plan)

  • Price: No free plan; every tier includes a 14-day free trial. Starter $25.00/mo billed monthly or $18.75/mo billed yearly; Growth $50.00/mo monthly or $37.50/mo yearly; Scale $82.50/mo billed yearly
  • Platform: Web and app
  • Source: later.com/pricing (checked 2026-08-29)

What it can do

  • Schedule posts on a visual content calendar and read performance in the same tool
  • Suggest best times to post for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok
  • Platform analytics, with retention set by plan: up to 3 months on Starter, up to 1 year on Growth
  • Growth and above add a social inbox plus internal and external approval workflows

What it cannot do

  • Detect unfollows
  • Analyse fake followers or follower quality
  • Be used for free after the trial ends

How to use it: If your pain is "publishing and analytics live in two different tools", this class of platform saves you workflow time, not analytical depth.

Tool 5: Iconosquare (Has a Free Plan)

  • Price: The figures below are the euro list prices shipped in the pricing page's own source; the page converts the currency by visitor location (see the note at the end of this section). Free plan at 0 €/month (2 social profiles, 1 user, 10 posts per profile per month, basic analytics, 1 month of analytics history). Billed yearly, the paid plans start at Starter 9 €, Launch 33 €, Scale 69 € and Custom 116 € per month; monthly billing costs more (per the official FAQ, annual billing saves up to 17%, the equivalent of 2 months). Iconosquare offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card required
  • Platform: Web and app
  • Networks: The pricing page FAQ reads "Iconosquare supports 8 social networks: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, X (Twitter), Pinterest, Threads, and YouTube", with X (Twitter) available only on Launch, Scale and Custom. Per the FAQ, Starter starts at 3 social profiles and Launch, Scale and Custom start at 5 (Scale goes up to 20). The free plan has 2
  • Source: Iconosquare Plans and Pricing (checked 2026-10-02)

What it can do

  • Profile analytics, group analytics, reels analytics, tags and mentions analytics, custom dashboards
  • Competitor reports, hashtag reports and report scheduling; the Custom plan adds white-label reporting and API access
  • Data retention of 1 month (Free), 1 year (Starter and Launch) or 2 years (Scale)
  • Scheduling with content approval workflows

What it cannot do

  • Detect unfollows
  • Do much on the free plan — 2 social profiles, basic analytics, limited reporting
  • Be learned in an afternoon; the feature surface is large

⚠️ Iconosquare's pricing is easy to quote wrong in three ways. Billing basis: 9 / 33 / 69 / 116 are the annually billed monthly starting rates, and monthly billing costs more (the official FAQ says annual billing saves up to 17%). Currency: the prices shipped in the pricing page's source are in euros (€), but the page looks up the visitor's location through ipapi.co and lets Paddle convert — euro, Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, Brazilian real and pound sterling each get their own symbol and everything else falls back to $ — so the currency and the numbers you see may differ from this article; go by what your own browser shows. Network list: as of 2026-10-02 the pricing page covers the 8 networks listed above (Threads included), not the 7 that often get quoted.

Tool 6: HypeAuditor (Professional, Paid)

  • Price: Basic plan from $299/month, billed annually — verbatim from the official blog: "The basic HypeAuditor plan starts at $299/month when billed annually". hypeauditor.com/pricing itself only offers a demo booking, with no public price table
  • Platform: Web
  • Source: How much does HypeAuditor cost? (checked 2026-08-29)

What it can do

  • Influencer Discovery, Account Analytics, CRM and Campaign Management — every plan includes all of these modules; the tiers differ in usage limits, not in which features exist
  • Fake follower and audience quality assessment, which is why it is used for influencer vetting
  • The basic plan includes standard influencer performance reports and contact data (roughly 1,000 emails per month)

What it cannot do

  • Offer full Discovery filtering on the basic plan — AI Search and advanced audience parameters need higher tiers
  • Provide Competitor Monitoring or Market Analysis below PRO and Enterprise
  • Schedule posts, or detect unfollows

How to use it: This is a tool for whoever has to verify someone else's follower quality — brands, agencies, talent managers. An individual creator only needs it when a brand asks for a third-party audience quality report.

Why No "Who Unfollowed Me" App Is Named Here

It is the most requested feature, and not one product is named here. That is not an omission — this category cannot be answered responsibly by recommending a single app. What checking the stores on 2026-08-29 actually turned up:

  • Near-identically named products belong to entirely different developers. One keyword in the App Store routinely returns four or five products from unrelated developers. The names look like the same thing; the features, permissions and security posture are not. Naming one would be a guess.
  • A common pattern is no such name in the App Store at all, while Google Play carries a same-named micro-app from a solo developer with no ratings and no visible sign of maintenance.
  • Delisting is frequent. Package IDs in this category returning 404 is normal — and once one is gone, a row of same-named products is already there to take its place.

So what helps is not a shortlist, it is a test you can run yourself. If you still want to use this class of app:

  1. Accept the constraint first. Instagram does not supply unfollower identities, so the list can only be something that app accumulated on your account itself — and the record stays inside it. Switch apps and you start from zero.
  2. Read three fields on the store page: developer name, last updated date, number of ratings. If it has not been updated in over a year, skip it.
  3. Never install from outside the official store, and never go hunting for an archived APK because an app was delisted.
  4. Never enter your password. Only accept authorisation completed on an Instagram domain.
  5. Go easy on bulk unfollowing. Instagram publishes no daily limit; the "no more than N per day" figures circulating online are not official values. The risk is real, the number is invented.

One thing all six share: not one of them can tell you who unfollowed you. That is not a bad tool choice — Instagram does not provide the data.

Picking by Scenario

Scenario 1: Zero budget, just want a clear view of your own account

  • Instagram Insights (official, your own account)
  • Social Blade free tier (competitors)
  • Phlanx engagement calculator (your rate)

Total cost: $0. This combination answers all three of "how is my content doing", "how fast are competitors growing" and "what is my engagement rate".

Scenario 2: Serious about growth, need scheduling and longer history

Run Iconosquare's free plan against Later's 14-day trial. The difference is not in the feature lists — it is in which problem hurts more:

  • Hurts at "I can't keep up with publishing" → start with Later
  • Hurts at "the data isn't deep enough and I have reports to hand over" → start with Iconosquare

Before you pay, decide whether you are buying monthly or annually. Both are cheaper billed annually (Later labels annual billing 25% off; Iconosquare says up to 17%).

Scenario 3: You need to check whether someone bought their followers

HypeAuditor. It is the only one of the six with fake-follower detection as its core product, and the only one starting at $299/month. An individual creator needs it in exactly one situation: a brand has asked for a third-party audience quality report.

Scenario 4: Many accounts, reports going out to clients

Iconosquare's Custom plan has white-label reporting and API access; the pricing page lists it as "5 to unlimited social profiles", so you contact them for it. The Scale plan goes up to 20 social profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do different tools show different numbers?

This is normal, and there are three reasons. Different sources — the official API exposes a limited set of fields, and every tool fills the gaps differently. Different refresh timing — some update live, some once a day. Different formulas, which matters most: whether engagement rate uses followers or reach as the denominator, and how many posts are sampled, is usually not published and is rarely the same across tools.

The working rule: treat Instagram Insights as the reference, use third-party numbers as indicators, and watch trends rather than absolute values. One tool's change over time tells you more than two tools' disagreement.

Are free tools enough, and when should I pay?

If all you need is your own performance, competitor growth speed and an engagement rate, official Insights plus two free web tools cover it. You do not need to pay.

What paid tiers actually buy is three things: longer data retention, report export and customisation, and multiple accounts or seats. Paying starts to make sense when you have to hand data to someone else — a client, a manager, a brand partner — or need to compare against something older than 90 days.

Run a full content cycle on a free tier or trial first, and confirm you actually open those reports before subscribing.

Why can't official Insights show me who unfollowed me?

Because there is no such metric in Instagram's published list. What you get is the net gained/lost figure inside Total followers — not the account names.

Third-party apps can produce a list only because they accumulated their own before-and-after record on your account — Instagram did not hand them that data. The record lives inside that app, which is why switching apps means starting over.

Will bulk unfollowing through a tool get my account limited?

It can. Instagram publishes no daily limit, and the "stay under N per day" figures circulating online are not official values — following them guarantees nothing.

The safer approach is to avoid large bursts in a short window and avoid automation features altogether. If you are already seeing action-blocked messages, stop entirely for a day or two rather than retrying.

An analyser says I have lots of ghost followers. Should I clean them out?

Look at how it decided. Most tools define ghost followers as "never liked, never commented" — but not liking is not the same as not looking. The algorithm was never going to put every post in front of every follower.

Obvious fake accounts (no profile photo, no posts, randomised usernames) are safe to remove. Real people who simply do not engage are not worth purging. And be ready for one thing: your follower count will drop afterwards. That is expected — the number to watch is whether engagement rate follows it up.

I have a personal account. Can I still use Insights?

Yes. Instagram's Help Center is explicit that any public account — personal or professional — can view Insights. Two caveats: switching back to a private account removes access (you can recover the data by going public again within 90 days), and boosting posts really is professional-accounts-only — reading data and paying to promote are two different things.

How often should I check my data?

It depends on your publishing rhythm, but the useful habit is to check on a fixed cycle rather than whenever you remember: net follower change and engagement direction weekly, best-performing content type monthly.

Official data only goes back 90 days, so if you want to compare across quarters you either archive screenshots monthly or pay for a tool with longer retention. That single point is often what really decides whether paying is worth it.

Turning Data Into Action: Four Points

1. Start from your question, not the tool list

Tool lists are long; your actual questions are usually one or two. Working backwards from the question is much faster than working down the list.

2. A fixed cycle beats volume

Check the same metrics on the same day each week and trends become visible. Checking engagement one week and reach the next tells you nothing.

3. When numbers disagree, the official one wins

Third-party tools contradicting each other is normal. Insights is the only first-party source.

4. Data finds the problem; content solves it

No analytics tool will make your content better. Use the data to find which content type is dragging the average down — the work after that is in the content itself.

Start Optimising With Data

Three steps to begin:

  1. Today: Confirm your account is public, open Insights, and get familiar with Views, Interactions and Total followers
  2. This week: Add 3 competitors to Social Blade favourites and note their net change
  3. This month: Calculate your engagement rate with Phlanx, then calculate it again a month later — the comparison that matters is against yourself

If your analysis points to adjusting follower composition, Lion Fans offers Instagram follower products split into Taiwan and global source routes, with the drop-rate range listed per item on the pricing page and a "30-day top-up guarantee" label on the items it applies to.
